This study was conducted to develop postharvest chemicals, and to develop techniques practiced at harvest by grower for extending vase life and improving quality of cut gladiolus (Gladiolus gandavensis cv. Spic and Span). Among single treatments, 100 ppm 8-HQS, S, 10, 20 ppm BA, 10 ppm GA, 7% ethanol, 1 mM STS, 20 ppm kinetin, 100 ppm spermidine, or 1000 ppm spermidine pulsing significantly extended vase life of cut gladiolus. Thirty minute dipping treatment of 1 mM STS followed by 20 hr pulsing in 40% sucrose + 200 ppm 8-HQS + 20 ppm BA solution showed the best results in vase life and quality of cut gladiolus. This pretreatment extended vase life by 32% than control, and improved quality of cut gladiolus significantly in flower diameter (41%), percent flowering (27%), fresh weight, water uptake, and anthocyanin content, and depressed ethylene production and respiration rate.
